Giovanni Risitano was born in Messina on July 16th 1953.
He had his formal high school teaching at the Liceo Maurolico in Messina getting the Maturità Classica in 1970.
He entered the School of Medicine at Messina University where he had his M.D. with the maximum cum laude in July 1077 presenting a graduation thesis on experimental studies with vascular grafts in growing animals. As a senior medical student he had a summer clerkship in USA getting his first approach with microsurgical techniques and hand surgery.
He underwent and passed the ECFMG examination on July 27th 1977and has been awarded certificate no. 287-304-0.
After getting his medical licence he started his postgraduate training in General Surgery at the S. Angelo dei Rossi Hospital in Messina.
He also worked at the Accident and Emergency Unit at the Piemonte Hospital in Messina.
He received a grant from the Bonino-Pulejo Foundation to get further experience in Hand Surgery in the Clinica Ortopedica of Modena.
He trained in Orthopaedics in Messina and Catania where he had his Board certication in Orthopaedics in July 1980.
He then trained in Plastic Surgery in Catania, where he had the BC in November 1985.
During his formal post-graduate training he served as a Fellow in Hand Surgery at the Hand Surgery Unit in Legnano Hospital with Prof . E. Morelli in 1980 and as a Fellow in Microsurgery at the New England Medical Center, TUFTS University, Boston with L. K. Ruby in 1981-82. He also spent several months at Muscoloskeletal Tumor Centre of the Rizzoli Institute in Bologna with Prof. M. Campanacci in 1984.
He has been appointed as Ricercatore Universitario at Messina University in the Department of Orthopaedics and he had the opportunity to serve as a Fellow At the Pulvertaft Hand Centre in DERBY UK in 1987-88.
He has been awarded the FESSH Fellowship in 1992 and he underwent and passed the examination for the European Diploma in Hand Surgery in Paris in 1996.
He has had his teaching activity in the School of Medicine in Messina University at the Clinica Ortopedica (SSD Med 33)until 2003, when he became part of the Chirurgia Plastica (SSD MED 19) team being thereafter the actual teacher of this subject in the 3 year Course of Phisiotherapy.
He entered the Department of Specialità Chirurgiche in which he organized the Interdisciplinary Group for Hand Surgery which he actually leads.
He has been teaching in the postgraduate Scuole di Specializzazione in Orthopaedics and in Plastic Surgery dealing mostly with Hand Surgery and he is also teaching at the Corso di Perfezionamento in Microchirurgia at Messina University.
He has organized the Conjoined Meeting of the Italian and Spanish Hand Surgery Societies (SICM and SECM)in 1981, the Meeting of the Italian Society for Microsurgery (SIM) in 2002 and he is regularly running Regional Courses for Hand Surgery and Rehabilitation and Splinting of the Hand in Sicily, being meanwhile Member of the Board of SIM.
He is co-Author of more than 90 scientific pubblications. He also partecipated to the “Trattato italiano di Chirurgia della mano” published by Verduci in November 2006 on behalf of the SICM (italian Society for Surgery of the Hand).
His trentennial experience in Hand Surgery and Microsurgery spans from replantation to free tissue transfers and from CTD to complex limb reconstruction after tumor resection.
In the last 5 years his practice in tramatic and elective cases has been expanded due to the 100% hand practice and more numerous operative sessions available in Plastic Surgery, comparatively to Orthopaedics, with approximate 400 operative procedures per year.
He’s quit the full time academic career to switch to full time private practice.
